National Research Council Research Associate-
ship Programs
The National Academies of Sciences’ NRC Research Associateship Programs (RAP) promote excellence in scientific and
technical research conducted by the U.S. government through
the administration of programs that offer graduate, postdoctoral, and senior level research opportunities at sponsoring
federal laboratories (list available through Research Associateship Web site) and affiliated institutions. Once a host laboratory and Research Adviser are identified and the applicant has
contacted the proposed Research Adviser, an application is
submitted through the NRC Research Associateship Programs
online application system.
Stipend: $45,000–$80,000 for recent doctoral recipients and
are proportionally higher for Senior Associates.
Benefits: NRC research associates receive health insurance,
relocation benefits, and an allowance for professional travel.
The host laboratory provides research facilities, equipment,
and funding for supplies to support the Associate’s research.
When: One year, with possible renewal for a second and
third year
Where: Sponsoring federal laboratories and affiliated institutions (list on Web site)
Other Awards: Senior awards may be for shorter periods.
Summer Faculty awards are for 8–14 weeks, renewable for
up to 3 successive summers. The tenure for Davies Fellows is
three years and is divided between the U.S. Military Academy (for teaching) and the Army Research Laboratory (for
research).

November 1. Note: Not all sponsors participate in all four
reviews.
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL): Higher
Education Research Experiences—Graduate Stu-
dents
Higher Education Research Experiences at Oak Ridge Na-
tional Laboratory (HERE at ORNL) provides research op-
portunities and associated activities that use ORNL’s unique
resources to complement academic programs to enhance
science, mathematics, engineering, and technology education;
encourage careers in science and technology; and improve
scientific literacy. At the same time, the program contributes
to the Laboratory mission.
Award: Stipend of $600 per week, paid bi-weekly (pro-rated if
part-time). For students with a permanent address more than
50 miles from Oak Ridge, $150 per week housing allowance
(pro-rated if part-time) plus one round trip (limited to $500
total)
When: Up to 52 weeks consecutively, possible extensions.
Full- and part-time appointments with individualized start
and end dates

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL): Higher
Education Research Experiences—Thesis/Disser-
tation Research
Higher Education Research Experiences at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (HERE at ORNL) provides research opportunities and associated activities. The program is designed
to complement academic programs by using the unique
resources of Oak Ridge National Laboratory to enhance science, mathematics, engineering, and technology education;
encourage careers in science and technology; and improve
scientific literacy. At the same time, the program contributes
to the Laboratory mission.
Award: Thesis research stipend, $625 per week, paid bi-weekly (pro-rated if part-time); Dissertation research stipend, $650
per week, paid bi-weekly (pro-rated if part-time). For students
